School Credit Program

The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts in cooperation with Chinook College of the Calgary Board of Education is pleased to be able to offer ten credits per year per grade to grade ten, eleven and twelve students enrolled in the Young Canadians School of Performing Arts.

Our partnership with the CBE has been in existence for over a decade.

The advantages of the Work Experience credits is that they can be offered to a student in any grade and there is no pre-requisite requirement. This means that a student entering the YC School of Performing Arts in their current grade eleven school year would receive ten credits for Work Experience 21. They would not have to be placed or complete the grade ten year in work experience. Respectively, students in their grade twelve year would receive credits in Work Experience 31. This credit and grade offering means that the student would be able to count the mark given by the YC School of Performing Arts in their academic average for entrance in a post-secondary institution. Students who have been in the YC School of Performing Arts for the three years of their high school education would be eligible to receive a total of thirty credits with Alberta Education and their transcript. Unfortunately, only at total of 15 of these credits can be applied towards earning their high school diploma.

In addition to the Work Experience credits, ALL students will need to complete the CTR-1010 course. This is a questionnaire which informs students about their “rights” when hired as an “apprentice” in a Work Experience program. Students will often take this component in their high school as part of their CALM 10 course. YC students may elect to take this course as part of their YC Work Experience program but should seek the advice of their high school counselor to see if they can opt out of the course in their high school. Confirmation from their guidance counselor is important to ensuring the course work required for graduation is complete. The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts program through Chinook College, will verify that students in grades eleven and twelve have received credits for the CTR-1010 course.

Students in the YC School of Performing Arts, will need to indicate their wish to receive credits in Work Experience to the Young Canadians staff at the beginning of the school term in September. High School students in the program will be called to a meeting and receive the Work Experience package.

Each YC student will need to:

• Provide their Alberta Learning Number
• Complete their registration form for the program
• Provide their educational plan for the program
• Complete the CTR-1010 package, or provide evidence of having done so through their CALM course at their High School.

Once these elements are received, the YC student will be added to the Work Experience program listing for the year.

YC students will receive evaluations for their work with the program throughout the year, with a report with their final mark being forwarded to Chinook College for processing with Alberta Education at the end of May. These marks will be registered with Alberta Education and added to their transcripts.

The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts, and the Calgary Stamped Foundation are proud of their association with Chinook College and our ability to provide this valuable program to the youth enrolled in our program.
